10:59 am - get free books (1)

I have run out of shelf space for my new books and am in no mood to pack them
off in cardboard boxes. Over the next few weeks, I am going to give away some
of my books to caring book-lovers. The books are going to go out as prizes
to the series of quizzes that are going to be posted here. And I get to be
the judge :)

Here we go then ...

Quiz 1: Bridge of Death

. What... is your name?
. What... is your quest?
. What... peculiar geographic feature does Uzbekistan has and which is
the only other country with that feature?

Go on. Off you go!

Quiz 1 Giveaway books:

The books going out today are two volumes containing
all four parts of 'The Book of the New Sun' series by Gene Wolfe.

The Book of the New Sun Vol 1: Shadow and Claw
The Book of the New Sun Vol 2: Sword and Citadel

From the back cover:

"... is an extraordinary epic, set a million years in the future, on an Earth
transformed in mysterious and wondrous ways.
Severian is a torturer, exiled from his guild after falling in love with
one of his victims, and now journeying to the distant city of Thrax, armed
with his ancient executioner's sword, Terminus Est..."

Winner of the World Fantasy, Nebula, and British Fantasy awards. One of the
most acclaimed science fantasy ever.

10:22 pm - LJ yearly roundup

Three things 'calendar' and 'tags' told me about my lj posts over the last year:

.
Maximum number of posts are in 2nd Quarter (Apr - Jun; 36) and the least are in the
last quarter (Oct - Dec; 9). Its kind of strange cos as I recall there were
many more things happening in the last quarter than the other three.
Lot of things were happening with work and other projects. Then I attended Intel Developer Forum
and had lot of things to talk about - itanium, montecito, compilers, and the ultimate geek contest!
And there was the Kodai trip and several marriages and engagements for close friends. And reunion for
muwee batch and veritas friends. More books, puzzles, and other vague stuff that I never got to post
about. In comparison, the 2nd quarter had one main event - Munnar trip and all other posts were about
poems, puzzles, and vagaries. Another special for 2Q was that my blog had just completed
one year. I never expected it to last that long and the excitement showed up in the number of posts.

.
Most of my posts (according to the tags) were about 'vagaries'. That at least
justifies the blog title.

Other high scoring tags were puzzles, books, and personal.

.
Most of my posts are done on Tuesday and only 10% of my posts happen on weekends. Thats
about right as there is something to talk about at the start of the week and
mondays are just too busy. Also, I didn't spend too much time online on
weekends in 05. That's changing in 06 - starting with this mail.

11:33 pm - Spreading the Word

This is quoted from Dhar's Blog.
quote

Horrors of War

Close your eyes and think of someone very close to you. Now imagine someone:

- Piercing this person's ears with hot rods
- Puncturing this person's eyes, gouging them out
- Inflicting burns on his body using cigarettes
- Breaking his bones and teeth
- And after torturing him in this brutal fashion for over 22 days, shooting him dead.

This is what the Pakistani army did to Lt. Saurabh Kalia of the 4th JAT Regiment of the Indian Army during the Kargil war. Imagine the plight of the old parents of this young man who received his body in such a state, imagine their rage and helplessness.

We talk so much about the power of the blogosphere. What use is that power if we can not help these parents by raising this issue so that it is heard by International Human Rights Organisations? We have seen instances of main stream media in the US championing issues that were raised by bloggers. Why not in India?

If nothing else, just sign the online petition of Lt. Saurabh Kalia's father.

So, if you care and you think you can make a difference, raise the issue through your blog or any other means and add strength to the public voice.
